Where to find rosy-finches in the Sandia Mountains of central New Mexico

The world's most accessible location to see all three rosy-finches is in New Mexico
By Ken Schneider
Published: August 24, 2004
Retired physician Ken Schneider tells how he and his wife began watching Gray-crowned, Black, and Brown-capped Rosy-Finches at the Sandia Crest overlook east of Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1999, and how, over the next few winters, they worked with the U.S. Forest Service and Central New Mexico Audubon Society to allow birders to visit the Crest House Gift Shop and Restaurant in hopes of seeing the difficult-to-find rosy-finches. Schneider reports on the numbers of each species seen at feeders at the Crest House, and he describes how to get to the Crest House, safety tips for traveling to the high-elevation spot, and hotspots to bird along Crest Road.
