Contributing Editor David Allen Sibley explains why shape, flight style, and age are the three keys to making hawk identifications successfully and quickly. An accompanying painting by Sibley, depicting an adult and a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk, demonstrates how the hawks have similar shapes and patterns yet give distinctly different overall appearances.
