A Carolina Wren sings at the Woodend Nature Sanctuary in Chevy Chase, Maryland, in January 2010. Richard Weiblinger shot photos of it and other wrens for about an hour on the cold, wintry day.

He used a Nikon D300 with a Nikon 500mm f/4 lens. “I was shooting at 1/500 sec at f/4.0 to be able to produce a very shallow depth of field and thus blur out the branches,” Richard says.
